The Bear and the Nightingale Review (I LOVED IT) By Emily Anderson. I had never heard of The Bear and the Nightingale book series, or of Katherine Arden. It was a mere chance that I came across the book at all at my local library. Our librarian had recently read the book in the local city book club, and decided to buy the series for the library.

Others longed for more plot. Both sets of reviews seemed to agree that this book was entirely about atmosphere and setting, and not about character and plot. They are wrong. The setting here is strong. Powerful. Beautifully written and evokes strong emotions. 2017-01-17

The first book in the series, The Bear and the Nightingale, sets up our main character, Vasya’s, life. The book really starts after she is born , when she turns about 6 years old.
written in that oh-so nostalgic way that all fairytales are, this debut novel is immersed in whimsy, magic, and–like all the old stories–that vein of wickedness that makes the story so much more thrilling.
